देशभर में स्थित 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों का महत्व बताया गया है परंतु तीर्थ की नगरी उज्जैन में महाकाल शिवलिंग को विशेष शिवलिंग की मान्यता प्राप्त है. महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग तीन हिस्सों में है. निचले खंड में महाकालेश्वर, दूसरे खंड में ओमकारेश्वर और तीसरे खंड में नागचंद्रेश्वर शिवलिंग विराजमान है. नागचंद्रेश्वर शिवलिंग के साल में सिर्फ एक बार नाग पंचमी के दिन ही दर्शन होते हैं.
